The news that Seagate and
Western Digital have sold their entire 2026 hard drive production to AI hyperscalers is being treated as a supply chain crisis.
But it's also something more significant. It’s a wakeup call that the storage the world has relied on for decades is buckling under the weight of the data age.
More than a logistics delay, the current wait times represent a fundamental shift in storage supply from the exponential data growth of the AI era.

When Google, Amazon, and Microsoft can lock up global HDD production two years in advance, it reveals an uncomfortable situation. For decades, the industry's answer to growing data volumes was simply to buy more drives. No-one was incentivised to rethink the fundamentals. The hyperscalers didn't create that complacency, but their buying power has now brought it to everyone’s attention.
The response from many vendors to extend on-premises capacity into the cloud, buy time, reduce the pressure on physical storage will work in the short term. However, it’s not a sustainable solution.
